Frequently Asked Questions

Why is your business name “Variant Editing”?

I promise you it has nothing to do with the COVID-19 pandemic. Little did I know, when I launched my editing business, how prevalent the word “variant” would become!

It has everything to do with how I love the incredible variety within the English language.

I enjoy (and am a constant student of) the little differences in accent, word usage, slang, spelling, and even punctuation in English, both within the US and around the world. These differences are not only interesting; they are important to get right.

Have you ever read something written about a place you love, only to realize that the writer doesn’t know that place at all? The name of your hometown is spelled incorrectly, or the writer refers to that super common ingredient in your culture’s cuisine by the wrong name? (It’s New Mexico chile, thank you very much!) When this happens, it stings a little. You want your culture and your language to be represented with authenticity and care. When it isn’t, the work lacks credibility. Little details mean a lot to readers. I like getting these things right.

“Variant Editing” reflects my appreciation for the language nuances that matter.

How will you return my work to me?

I use email, Google Drive, OneDrive, or DropBox—whatever you are most comfortable with.

How long is your turnaround time?

For smaller projects, I have a turnaround time of forty-eight hours, once I start. If there is a project ahead of yours, it may take a day or two longer. For longer projects, it depends on word count and deadline. I aim to do quality work for every client. Turnaround on longer projects depends on work already in queue. I’ll communicate an estimated time with you upon acceptance of your project.

I don’t see my genre/project type listed.

If you have a project and aren’t sure if it’s something I’d work on, please contact me. I’m happy to discuss it with you.
